ELECTION 2008: NEITHER RACE NOR GENDER

Well, America, here’s where we are today.  Seems like lots of folks are still on the Euphoria Express that came clickety-clacking out of this year’s Democratic primary.  I see lots of chests puffing up as we point to ourselves and say, ‘Lookee what we did!  A woman and a black – aren’t we something?’  And the buzz continues regarding the ‘historicity’ of it all.

Indeed, this election may well prove to be historic - and that in a way that perhaps won’t be quite as rosy as it appears to be at first blush.

Just as I firmly believe no candidate should be denied a vote based on race or gender, I believe equally as strongly that no candidate should automatically gain a vote based on that same criteria – and that seems to be what’s in play just now.  Folks seem to be jumping onto the Obama bandwagon solely because of his skin color as though it automatically qualifies him for the presidency.  The truth is that, of course, it doesn’t – any more than Hillary Clinton’s gender automatically qualifies her.  Obama’s actual qualifications remain as non-descript as they’ve been from the outset of his campaign - those can’t be augmented by anything other than bona fide experience which, as a point of fact, he doesn’t have.

My vote will be against Obama come November for a number of reasons, a few of which are as follows:

  • Over the past two years, the Democrat-controlled Congress has seen to it that nothing significant be accomplished.  High on ‘power’, Pelosi, Reid and others have time after time stymied or outright blocked their counterparts’ legislative efforts simply because they could.  Countless hours have been given to everything other than meaningfully addressing the issues we face as a nation and I believe that’s a huge disservice to both our country and its citizens.  Two years of that has been more than enough – I don’t want any more.
  • The images of 9/11 remain sharp in my mind and my vote will never be cast for any candidate receptive to the Palestinian community that found the deaths of nearly 3,000 American civilians cause for celebratory dancing in the streets.
  • A Supreme Court which hands my Constitutional rights to foreign-national, enemy combatants is not a Court I can support.
  • A belief that expansion of government is the answer to our nation’s issues is not one I share.  Obvious here is the rule of thumb that says the broader the scope, the more challenging the monitoring.  I equate that to a mom with four kids as opposed to one – the smaller the target, the greater the scrutiny.  Additionally, I’m a ‘circle the wagons’ kind of person and genuinely believe that, given the nature of the issues we face, we need to lock the floodgates, not throw them open, to reestablish our sovereignty and protect this country from her enemies, both foreign and domestic.

I’m voting against Obama in the fall, not because he’s black but because (1) he’s not qualified, and (2) because Far-to-Radical Left can never best serve the country as a whole – it isn’t meant to.
